I had a spare hour or two today and got around to sorting out my office at home. I found a model that had been in a bag since I moved out of my parent’s house. Hence the dust in the pics.
Anyone else remember the original Lego Agents range? I think I had a lot of them, but never the main base truck… This was the base helicopter, with two winches that allowed agents to jump from the open side doors.
Inside, there were computers and a stash of tools for other agents once the helicopter had landed;
The other selling features for me when I got it were the large cockpit for two minifigs and the interlocking rotors that spun at the push of a slider at the rear;
Anyway. So, seeing as I hadn’t had the set out in ages I thought that it didn’t really warrant remaining as it was. I think I wasn’t too keen on the look of the model when the side doors were shut. The helicopter looked too long and tube like.
So I had an idea in mind to make it into a space dropship. Retaining the front bay doors and their winches and modify the rest of the model to give it a more space look.
Other source of inspiration was the Lego Movie in which only pieces from the original model are used to make the new one. Now this seemed like an awesome idea, until I realised just how few bricks were used in the original model. It was mostly technic girders and large plates.
Stripped down to what I wanted to keep it looked like this;
I persevered though and am pretty happy with the results. So here it is, the Rhino drop ship. There are still seats for two in the cockpit, including a minifig with a tail (don’t ask) and two to be dropped on the winches.
By simple happenstance when the bay doors are now open they cover/protect the engines. Weapons and missiles are still rife and there are plenty of locations for a minifig in space to grasp hold.
This wasn’t the easiest of mods I’ve done as it was the first where I’d used nothing but the original pieces and I didn’t have a distinct idea of what I wanted. True I’ll probably end up changing it in the future, but I still love the result.
I flipped the computer panels upside down to be used as ground scanners from the cockpit.
The last piece I added was the helicopter tail at the front. It’s also where the ship gets her name.
Let me know what you think. Have you modified larger models using nothing but original pieces?
What was your inspiration? Did you have a plan before you started? Or did you just wing it?
Until next time!
